Basel and Martigny echo each other's pictorial roars

The Kunstmuseum Basel and the Fondation Pierre Gianadda are decked out for the winter in the same garish colors, those of the group of painters who earned the label «fauves» in Paris in 1905. Both exhibitions run until January 21, 2024.

The Octodurian event is called «les années fauves» (the Fauve years), while its Basel counterpart modestly begs the question by referring to «Matisse, Derain and their friends». But these are the same artists.

Pour remettre en contexte, nous nous trouvons au début du XXe siècle. Matisse, Manguin, Marquet, Camoin, Rouault ont tous suivi les cours de Gustave Moreau à l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Il s’agit d’un groupe d’amis ayant étudié ensemble. Derain, Vlaminck et Friesz font connaissance en peignant sur l’île de Chatou en 1900.
