A look at the news - Loris S. Musumeci

At the heart of the news last Saturday, June 11, 2016, were homosexuality and Islam within the Orlando tragedy. Forty-nine dead and fifty-three wounded was the bloody result. The massacre took place in a gay club in Orlando, Florida. A young American of Afghan origin, Omar Mateen, was responsible; the act was claimed by the Islamic State.

It's time for the realm of inconsistencies to come out into the open, for both libertarian and conservative ideologies, for Democrats and Republicans alike. The populists of the puritanical right, such as Trump, are taking advantage of the event to further blame Islam and immigration. It's worth remembering, however, that most of these politicians aren't exactly the gay community's best friends. They even like to call them sodomites who harm society by practicing an «unnatural» sexuality. And yet, if the latter suffer a massacre at the hands of a Muslim, they might as well play on false compassion to bolster their political rhetoric. It's disgusting.

However, the same incoherence can be found among the good guardians of the most holy tolerance of everything and for everything: the «bien-pensants», as they are commonly called. These are the "bien-pensants", as they are commonly called, who, with their always sweet and silly words, defend body and soul both the rights of homosexuals and those of Muslims, the great victims of society. Their message is as follows: Islam is a religion of peace, love and tolerance, and homosexual couples, out of love, tolerance and equality, have the same right to marriage as heterosexuals, and above all the right to a child, whatever the price or manipulation involved.

The problem is obvious: one of the two protégés is not very affectionate towards the other. Islam and homosexuality come into conflict. How should our tolerant left react? Will LGBT rights advocates say the same about Islam? Nevertheless, let's not hand out generalities indiscriminately - many people can tell the difference.

A minimum of coherence is essential, and is the first step towards a serious policy. Profiting from the misfortune of those you don't like for your own interests is dishonest, but so is defending an ideology at all costs in order to reject your own culture.

Let's pay tribute to the dead of the Orlando massacre, not because they were gay, nor because they were cruelly murdered by a Muslim according to the Islamic State's plans, but because people lost their lives. Too many politicians forget the person.
