In several of his writings, Georges Bernanos sought to argue that the «civilization of machines» was stripping humanity of its spirituality. It is certain that the mechanization of the world does not benefit our deepest faculties, and that, under the pretext of sparing us tedious tasks, it traps the individual in the snare of a frantic pace. Erasing the past, it crushes it in the present. For it is indeed our relationship to time that is at stake first and foremost, and man toils away in his comfort, drooling over the immediate.
