Rhye, «Blood»
Thursday melodies - Alexandre Wälti
What a delight! The sensual, slightly funky melodies of Women my head, while Blood was released at the beginning of the year. A sudden listen that works wonders. Rhye: the eternal beneficial resonance.
Entering the musical universe of this Canadian-Danish duo is like embracing the person you love most in the world and loving them, loving them so much that you escape into a galaxy of desires and abandon yourself to them. In an embrace that awakens just the right amount of love and provokes an energy loving two lustful bodies. An apt phrase for Blood in a few words, far too few. It perfectly matches the mood of Rhye's compositions and lyrics. Somewhere between the eroticism of Klimt's paintings and Hodler's peaceful landscapes. This contrast is also apparent on the album cover, elegantly designed by Rachell Smith (for the photo) and Stuart Hardie (for the artwork). design graph).
Let's talk music rather than painting or photography, since you're essentially here to discover sounds. An organ catches the ear from the very first track, setting a spellbinding scene. Waste takes the listener straight to the heart of the matter, straight into the realm of auditory pleasure. It's not the delicately isolated piano notes of Taste that will bring you out of the beneficent torpor of this music that's so right. What can we say about the superimposed vocal layers of Please ? Simply that the piece has the groove of a pure soul gem and the sweetness of a gesture of affection. The right synthesizer in the right place ensures a heady rhythm to the end and beyond.
A musical gem
The album then gives more room to the bass. That famous funky that I mentioned in the teaser suddenly appears on Count To Five. That riff that makes it impossible to have a bad time. That sound that's so good, intertwined with a few discreet, lively violin strokes. The strings then fade into the background, giving way to the caressing brass of Song For You, counterbalance and embrace them. A song that resonates with the classic of almost the same name, composed by Leon Russell and brilliantly reinterpreted by Donny Hathaway. A Piaf-style hymn to love without the French language, but with a similar message.
That's how you'll fall in love with Rhye's music. Especially as the duo are among those who prefer to wait five years before releasing an album, rather than composing by the bucketful. Just to let the sound evolve and infuse the emotions. Thank goodness! Quite simply, a musical ruby. Brilliant as the star Aldebaran in the middle of the Taurus constellation, and cut with incandescent desire.
