Wonder on the Nile

Northeast Africa is home to the world's longest river. But unlike its Amazonian counterpart, the Nile is a weak river, relying heavily on the rainy season for its flow. Since the construction of the Aswan dam, it has been possible to manage the river's floods, absorbing the torrents of the rainy season and redistributing the waters of Lake Nasser for the rest of the year. However, while the White Nile provides the river's length, more than two-thirds of its water comes from the Blue Nile, which flows from the Ethiopian highlands. Since 2011, a 175-metre dam has been under construction on Ethiopia's Sudanese border. And relations between Ethiopia and Sudan, with Egypt downstream, are punctuated only by threats and attempts at negotiation.
