When he took his first notes for Glamorama in the 1990s, Ellis wanted to write a more personal book. However, the result was no longer in keeping with the novel's growing scope, and the author rewrote the entire story. However, with the turn-of-the-century media event behind him, Ellis still wanted to use his drafts and began writing a memoir.
