European civilizations

«Westerner»: that's what Europeans, North Americans and Oceanians are called outside their own civilizational sphere. Latins, Anglo-Saxons and Slavs are all united under the same intriguing label. In our vocabulary, too, the notion of «Westerner» implies kinship, even group cohesion. Born during the Cold War in opposition to the Eastern bloc, at the start of the 21st century the Ponant is experiencing numerous internal tensions, which are probably due to the fact that it is not homogeneous. Originally, it was merely a temporary alliance between two civilizations: «Germanic/Protestant» and «Latin/Catholic». Nothing is more useful than a look at the history of Western civilizations.

His mind races. If you ask Jean Birnbaum a question, expect him to reel off sentence after sentence, reference after reference. He takes you to corners of your mind you’ve never explored before. Here is an intelligent and honest man who has the audacity to look within our weaknesses for the sources from which to draw renewed strength. He reveals and analyzes these weaknesses in *The Religion of the Weak. What Jihadism Says About Us,« which he published following the success of his book *A Religious Silence: The Left Facing Jihadism*. Jean Birnbaum is a journalist at *Le Monde*, where he edits the literary section, »Le Monde des Livres.«.

Jacques Pilet takes us back to Switzerland a century ago

Le journaliste suisse Jacques Pilet a sorti le mois dernier son deuxième roman aux Editions de l'Aire, Hôtel Belvédère. A sa lecture, nous nous plongeons dans la Suisse de 1914.
