The Eleven of Klapzuba is a novel written by Eduard Bass in 1922, about a soccer where principled values take precedence over the pursuit of wealth. Published in a (pre-)Soviet context, in the early years of Joseph Stalin's rule, the story stands as a defender of the popular art of soccer, where competition and professionalism were, in essence, frowned upon. To the caricatured power of homo sovieticus, the eleven sons of the Klapzuba peasant remind us, above all, of the importance of the notions of solidarity and fraternity in sport.
