Is social justice justice?

Last May, in a videoconference speech on the theme of financing development in poor countries, our current President Simonetta Sommaruga defended her vision of a global society: less unequal, more sustainable and better able to meet the challenges of societal change, including the current pandemic and climate change. But if this banal speech struck me, it's because she also wanted tomorrow's world to be... fairer! By this, the Socialist Federal Councillor didn't really mean justice, but social justice. So what is this notion that we come across so often? Does it have anything to do with traditional justice?

Le polémiste condamné pour antisémitisme, désormais poursuivi pour racisme, est-il vraiment le penseur type d’ultra-droite? N’y a-t-il pas aussi un peu de gauche dans son brouet? Des enjeux pour la définition des extrêmes, à l’heure d’un progressisme aux accents parfois totalitaires.

On Wednesday May 22, Jonas Follonier, editor-in-chief of this magazine, shared on social networks a photo of the men's toilet door at the Faculté des lettres et sciences humaines of the Université de Neuchâtel. On the door was a small poster masking the male logo and stating that «the toilets had been made gender-free because the male-female sigils displayed on the toilets oppress a section of the university population». The action was instigated by the «UniNE collective for the women's* and feminist strike», which is «calling for a boycott of these stereotyped, medieval codes».
