The character of the Joker, in addition to being thought-provoking in both cinematic and philosophical terms, reveals a number of political tensions that can be grouped together under the heading of «distances».

Firstly, distance in its most geographical sense: the very distance that separates a city from its outskirts. The film Joker is rooted exactly in this context. Without over-extrapolating, we can see the character of the Joker, with his madness, his incomprehension and his disappointments, as the metaphorical representative of a certain downtrodden population. Relegated to ugliness, to poverty, to the distant outskirts. This issue is conveyed more by the film's form than by the story itself, but didn't Victor Hugo say that «form is substance that rises to the surface?»
