Consputed in his native country, praised in the French-speaking world, Bret Easton Ellis returns at the start of this year with a new novel, his seventh. No surprises here: it's still about disillusioned youth, violence, drugs and bourgeois boredom. A revival, really?

Les Eclats, already the literary event of 2023?

When an artist releases a new work after so much time, it's always an event. When it's a musician, the public wonders about his sonic evolution. When it's a writer, readers wonder whether he's understood the issues of his time. In the case of Bret Easton Ellis, it's all of the above, because not only has it been a long time, but every one of his releases has been divisive.

With Les Eclats, we're in for a treat: the author doesn't question his own era, but nostalgically glorifies that of the last century.’
