What would a novel be without a main character? Without a being who, in the course of his adventures, glories and misadventures, would not arouse emotions in the reader? It would be a very dull book, I agree. Depending on the era and literary school, there are protagonists of all kinds: great tragic heroes, marginal anti-heroes, flamboyant-eyed supermen... Often, characters (and the works in which they appear) reflect an era and vice-versa.
