The Purple Biennial against the universality of artworks

The 2022 edition of the Venice Biennale is finally turning purple, and making progress thanks to a curator who has chosen to exhibit a large proportion of women artists. But what if we prefer a man's work?

Every odd-numbered year—and now, since the pandemic, every even-numbered year as well—professionals, art lovers, and tourists flock to Venice from May through November to experience the latest edition of the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art. This isn’t the first time a woman has served as curator, but this time, Italian curator Cecilia Alemani has finally reversed the trend: 80% of the exhibiting artists are women. She does not, however, view her approach as an act of activism. Each curator is simply free to choose the content of their event according to their own sensibilities.
