Maria Zambrano's thinking has rarely been exported outside her native Spain. Long exiled, notably in Switzerland, the author left behind a singular body of work, halfway between philosophy and poetry.
January 28, 1939. In a resort in northern Catalonia, a young Spanish philosopher prepares to flee her country devastated by three years of civil war. As she crosses the border, she notes the time in a notebook she carries with her at all times: 2:20pm. Maria Zambrano doesn't know it yet, but her exile will last for more than four decades - most of her life.
Thirty-five years earlier, in 1904, Maria Zambrano was born in Velez-Malaga into a family of schoolteachers with a socialist tradition. It was in this environment that she developed a social and educational conscience that would never leave her. After studying philosophy, she went on to study for a doctorate in education.
